AEC-BOX-88 SIMPLE SERIAL ADAPTER
FOR PARALLEL REMOTE DEVICES
'AEC-BOX-88' - Simple RS232/RS422 Serial Machine Control of Parallel Devices

The AEC-BOX-88 provides a simple RS232/RS422 serial machine control interface for parallel remote VTRs, DAT machines, and other devices. Only simple and basic machine control functions are supported, such as STOP, PLAY, FAST FORWARD, REWIND, RECORD, PAUSE, and EJECT, with corresponding serial status indications. This box cannot be used as a search/shuttle or edit controller.

The AEC-BOX-88 is small (modem sized), rugged (all metal), and attractive. For both reliability and convenience, an internal power supply is used, for which 115VAC/230VAC is required, and which is Hi-Pot tested for your (and our) safety.

Installation is fairly straight forward. First plug our box into a suitable voltage AC power outlet, and connect a 9-pin serial cable between our box and the controller. Then wire the parallel port on your device to the parallel port on the AEC-BOX-88. If making cables is not your specialty, we have the tools needed to make a special cable for you, and at a reasonable price.

There is a 15-day money back (less shipping) guarantee on this product if it fails to perform to your satisfaction.

If your application requires something a little different from what you see here, please give us a call. This somewhat generic box and its software have been designed with customization in mind. Since we are a small company, we can often respond quickly to your particular needs, and at a reasonable price.

Please call us at 1-800-782-2321, or at the number above, if you have any questions. We look forward to hearing from you.

Sincerely,

Tracey Ruesch, President

OPERATIONAL NOTES

As soon as a serial machine control message is received by the AEC-BOX-88, it pulls the appropriate CONTROL OUTPUT line to ground for a short period of time, then releases it, just as if you had manually pressed the corresponding button yourself.

The eight TALLY INPUTS can be used to indicate the operational state of the device being controlled. This information is then available to the controller via the serial port.

A +5V current limited (100mA) power supply output is provided for those applications which require optoisolators, logic circuits, or other specialized interface circuitry.

SERIAL INTERFACE NOTES

The 9-pin RS232/RS422 serial interface port on the AEC-BOX-88 has the same pinout as is found on Sony Betacam type tape machines. Thus, for "Sony Protocol" RS422 applications, a standard 9-pin serial cable will work fine. The AEC-BOX-88's RS232 connections are nonstandard, so if you want to connect the box to a standard IBM PC/AT type serial port, you will either need to order a special RS232 cable from us or make your own.

In theory, virtually any RS232/RS422 serial interface protocol can be supported by the AEC-BOX-88 ("it's only software"). If you require something other than the standard "Sony Protocol", ask us about adapting the box to your application. It's possible that we've already done it for somebody else, in which case changing a few DIP switches is all that is required.
